Movement Guide

Elbow & hand movement guide

Elbow, wrist or hand concerns may affect gripping, reaching or everyday tasks. Where you notice symptoms is a starting point for discussion.

General educational information. This guide does not diagnose the cause of symptoms or provide individualized treatment.

What is moving here?

The elbow, forearm, wrist and hand work together in many tasks. This broad highlight does not isolate individual finger structures or explain symptoms.

What are you noticing?

Gripping

Opening a jar, using a tool and holding a bag ask different things of the hand and arm. A specific example helps describe the difficulty without naming its source.

Lifting

Describe what you lift, how you hold it and what feels different. This guide cannot infer a tissue problem or set a lifting limit.

Reaching

Reaching combines movement across the shoulder, elbow and hand. Where discomfort is felt does not necessarily identify which area contributes.

Typing or computer work

The task, its duration and changes during the day can help explain your experience. An equipment choice alone does not establish a diagnosis.

Sports or repetitive activity

Describe the movement, frequency and any recent change in the activity. These details help prepare a discussion without generating a treatment plan.

Wrist or hand movement

Mention the movement and the daily task it affects. The broad model cannot identify a particular finger, nerve, tendon or joint as responsible.

Not sure

Start with what your arm or hand is making more difficult and any questions you would like to discuss.

What an assessment may explore

An assessment can explore factors that may be contributing and help determine appropriate next steps.

  • Elbow, wrist and hand movement
  • Grip or task-related strength when appropriate
  • The way you use your arm during relevant tasks
  • Shoulder or neck involvement when relevant
  • Your priorities for work, sport or daily activities

Questions you may want to bring to your assessment

  • How can I discuss the demands of my work or hobbies?
  • Could another area be contributing?
  • Which activities may be appropriate for me?
Not sure if this can wait?

Some symptoms or injuries may need medical assessment rather than routine physiotherapy. If you are uncertain about what level of care you need, consider contacting an appropriate healthcare service. For a medical emergency, call 911.

Your next step with Priyal

You can bring these questions to a healthcare professional. An assessment can help you discuss whether physiotherapy or another next step is appropriate.
