Movement Guide

Neck movement guide

Neck discomfort can involve stiffness, muscle pain or symptoms extending toward the arm. Different causes can feel similar.

General educational information. This guide does not diagnose the cause of symptoms or provide individualized treatment.

What is moving here?

The neck supports and moves the head. The blue area is a broad orientation cue; it does not identify a structure responsible for symptoms.

What are you noticing?

Turning your head

Turning involves movement across the neck rather than one isolated point. Noticing the direction and the everyday task can help you describe the experience without naming a diagnosis.

Neck discomfort when turning your head

Looking down

Reading, phone use and close work can involve different positions and durations. Describe the task and when you notice the discomfort; the position alone does not explain it.

Desk or computer work

It can help to describe your usual work, how long you do it and whether the experience changes during the day. A single posture or workstation detail cannot identify a diagnosis.

Symptoms extending toward the arm or hand

Tell a healthcare professional where you notice the symptoms and how they change. Selecting this option cannot determine their source or the appropriate level of care.

After an injury

How and when an injury happened is useful context for a healthcare professional. This guide cannot assess an injury or establish whether routine physiotherapy is appropriate.

Stiffness / limited movement

Describe what feels different and which daily tasks are affected. A feeling of stiffness does not, on its own, identify a particular tissue or diagnosis.

Not sure

Start with something you have noticed in daily life. You can bring questions even if you are unsure which movement matters.

What an assessment may explore

An assessment can explore factors that may be contributing and help determine appropriate next steps.

  • Your description and relevant health or injury history
  • Comfort and range when moving the head
  • Upper-back and shoulder movement when relevant
  • Arm or hand symptoms when relevant
  • Activities and goals that matter to you

Questions you may want to bring to your assessment

  • What movements should I modify for now?
  • Could another area be contributing to what I’m feeling?
  • What should I expect during an assessment?
Not sure if this can wait?

Some symptoms or injuries may need medical assessment rather than routine physiotherapy. If you are uncertain about what level of care you need, consider contacting an appropriate healthcare service. For a medical emergency, call 911.
