Movement Guide

Shoulder movement guide

Shoulder symptoms may affect reaching, lifting or comfortable movement. An assessment can explore factors that may be contributing and help determine appropriate next steps.

General educational information. This guide does not diagnose the cause of symptoms or provide individualized treatment.

What is moving here?

The shoulder region includes the upper arm, shoulder blade and surrounding muscles. Use Back or Bones to explore the area. Blue identifies a broad region, not injured tissue.

What are you noticing?

Reaching overhead

Several parts of the shoulder and shoulder blade work together during overhead movement. Where discomfort is felt does not by itself identify which structure is responsible.

Shoulder pain when reaching overhead

Lifting or carrying

An object’s position, the task and how often you repeat it give useful context. The same lifting difficulty can be experienced for different reasons.

Reaching behind you

Reaching behind can involve the upper arm, shoulder blade and trunk. Describe the task, such as dressing, without forcing the movement to demonstrate it.

Sleeping on that side

Describe whether discomfort relates to a position, turning in bed or another part of the night. This experience alone does not identify a shoulder condition.

Sports or exercise

The particular movement, equipment and changes in activity are useful conversation points. This guide does not determine which exercise or load is appropriate for you.

Stiffness / limited movement

Explain what you would like to do more comfortably and how the limitation has changed. A movement limit alone cannot identify its source.

Not sure

You can begin with a daily task or a question. You do not need to identify a structure before discussing your shoulder concern.

What an assessment may explore

An assessment can explore factors that may be contributing and help determine appropriate next steps.

  • Movement
  • Strength
  • Shoulder-blade movement
  • Neck contribution when relevant
  • Activities that reproduce your symptoms
  • What you want to get back to

Questions you may want to bring to your assessment

  • What movements should I modify for now?
  • Could another area be contributing to what I’m feeling?
  • Which exercises or activities may be appropriate for me?
Not sure if this can wait?

Some symptoms or injuries may need medical assessment rather than routine physiotherapy. If you are uncertain about what level of care you need, consider contacting an appropriate healthcare service. For a medical emergency, call 911.
